About WPM testing
WPM means words per minute. Many typing tests calculate one word as 5 characters, including letters, spaces, and punctuation. That means your score is based on how many correct characters you typed over time, not just how many full words you finished.
Accuracy matters because raw speed without correct letters does not show real typing skill. Someone who types a little slower but makes fewer mistakes can still be a stronger typist in real life.
Short tests can feel intense because one mistake changes the score quickly. Longer tests show stamina and consistency better, especially when your fingers start getting tired after a minute or two.
Your keyboard, key travel, posture, and muscle memory all affect typing speed. People who practice proper finger placement usually become more stable over time even if their score starts lower at first.
Typing tests are useful because they show progress clearly. If your WPM goes up and your accuracy stays high, that usually means your fingers are learning the patterns more automatically.
